Free guided tours of the Gabriel García Márquez Library and Social Housing 1737, the two shortlisted projects in Barcelona

With a total of six nominated works among the 40 finalists, Spain once again makes a strong showing in this year’s EUmies Awards and emerges as the country with the most nominations in Europe.

In the local context, a Barcelona project stands out, which has already received significant recognition and even became the Best Public Library in the World in 2023: the Gabriel García Márquez Library by SUMA Arquitectura will compete for the award in the “Emerging” category, alongside the Square and Tourist Office in the Portuguese village of Piódão, by João Branco and Paula del Río.

The Social Housing 1737 in Gavà, a coastal municipality located just a few kilometers from the city of Barcelona, is the second of the nominated projects in Catalan territory. This complex of 136 housing units, designed by Harquitectes, is remarkable for its symbiotic relationship with the surrounding landscape.

If you happen to be in Barcelona, don’t miss the opportunity to discover these two works through the architectural tours that we will be co-hosting as part of Out&About. Discovering Architecture in mid-May!

Many of the 40 projects shortlisted for the 2024 EUmies Awards are opening their doors from April to June throughout Europe

Organized by Creative Europe, the Fundació Mies van der Rohe and Guiding Architects, Out&About. Discovering Architecture will officially kick off on April 22 and run until June 23, offering a series of free activities for people of all ages and interests to explore the best architectural works completed across Europe within the past two years.

During the two-month event, many of the 40 shortlisted works can be experienced and lived through architecture tours, presentations, music, art, and gastronomy, in sessions guided by architecture professionals. Often, the authors themselves will act as hosts and mediators, providing interested audiences with a unique opportunity to personally explore and learn about their works.

You will find the complete list of participating spaces and the links to register for the corresponding events on the Guiding Architects website.

The winning projects will be announced on 25 April, and the awards ceremony will take place at the Mies van der Rohe Pavilion on May 14. We wish the seven finalists the best of luck!
